Seniors and Cell Phones, Should Seniors Make the Switch?

by Matt Jones

Cell Phones have fallen in price considerably making them a technology that almost ever consumer can afford. Therefore, cell phones are an item that senior citizens should be considering. We will list off some of the reasons why seniors should get one or have a family member purchase one for them.

Almost everyone can find a good use for a cell phone. There are a lot of different types and styles. These devices can be used for:

* Conducting business

* Staying in touch with family and their friends

* Feeling safe and secure

With the increases that are happening with availability and the decrease in the cost and the enhancement of the features that come with a cell phone it's actually not a bad idea for the senior to ditch their hard-line and get a cell phone.

Cell Phone Portability

Even if it is a senior that is one that stays home the majority of the time and is unlikely to ever venture out on their own a cell phone still makes more sense than a landline. The landline is something that is attached to a specific location and even if it is a cordless it is still bulky to carry around. So the senior would have to travel to wherever the phone is or carry the bulky cordless around the house with them. When it comes to convenience and if a quick call has to be made there is no substitute for a cell phone.

Economical Choice

Although there are a lot of people that think that if they switch themselves or someone over to a cell phone from a landline it's going to cost a lot more money and not fit into the senior budget, this simply is just not the case.

One reason why cell phones for senior are so affordable is that seniors often contact a few specific numbers and at regular times during the day or evenings. Many cell phone companies can therefore offer tailor programs that will allow seniors to only have to pay the base rate when making their calls. There are also many companies with prepaid plans that can offer reasonable rates for incoming and outgoing calls.

When it comes down to the price that you'd pay for unlimited long distance on the land line or if you don't have a long distance plan at all the cell phone can really pay for itself month after month along with the added security that you have the phone with you at all times. Potentially depending on how much you talk you could almost end up talking for free in comparison.

A New Toy for the Old Boy

Although there are of course going to be exceptions to this most seniors don't mind learning something new and a lot like it, keeps the mind fresh. With a cell phone and all the benefits that come with the new device they'll likely find something that they want to know more about, explore and have a good time. It's also the perfect bonding companion for a grandson and his grandfather.

If they don't like technology don't let this dissuade you as there are cell phone options out there that are just as easy, if not easier, than a lot of the land line handsets that are out there.
