Lifeline Cell Phone Service
For those who dont know what Safelink is, SafeLink Wireless is a cell phone service for people who belong to the low income group. It is supported by the government and provides a free cell phone as well as airtime every month. It works with a program called Lifeline. Lifeline was started by FCC (Federal Communications Commission) about two decades ago to supply discounted phone service to low income groups.
In April 2008, the FCC approved TracFone Wireless, a telecommunication company, to give the Lifeline program in 11 states in the United States of America. Now TracFone Wireless provides the Lifeline service in 19 states across the country. There are about 1700 such eligible telecommunication carriers (ETC) which are providing the Lifeline service in the country.
Safelink converts the amount of the discounted service which comes to approximately $13.5 into minutes which gives the user about 68 more minutes per month. Additionally, Safelink also gives a free cell phone to those customers who are eligible for the Lifeline program. The customer does not have to sign any contract and there no recurring fees or any other hidden monthly charges. Safelink provides the Lifeline service for one year only at a time, after which there is an annual verification. You are even allowed to change your minutes plan at the end of the year.
In order to avail of the Lifeline Service through SafeLink Wireless, you have to enroll in the program by going to their website and providing your zip code so that they can tell you if you qualify for the program and also how to apply in your specific area. Once you have applied, you will get all the benefits of Lifeline Service such as the free cellular phone, free minutes and free cellular service.
The eligibility criteria have to be observed to become a participant in the Lifeline program. SafeLink Wireless accepts individuals who are already participating in programs of Federal Aid such as Food Stamps and Public Housing Assistance and provide proof of the same. In other cases, if your total family income falls within the prescribed limit, then you are eligible to avail of the Lifeline program offered through SafeLink Wireless. Only one member of a family is allowed to participate in the Lifeline program. Hence if any other member of the family is participating in the program through any other service provider then no other individual of the family can be a member of it through SafeLInk Wireless.
