If You Know The Number, You Can Make Use Of Reverse Lookup To Obtain The Name

by Martin Masterson

The number shown on caller ID does not look familiar, and the caller did not leave a voice mail. You sent in a resume about a great job, and it is possible someone from the firm is trying to reach you. Of course, it could also be the organizer for an upcoming reunion, determined to enlist you for the decorating committee again. You would really like to know who called before you call them back, because you like to be prepared. The easiest way to find out is by using reverse lookup.

There are many free sites on the Internet where you can find out the name associated with the phone number. If you just type in the words "reverse lookup" in your search window, a list of choices will appear. Select the one you wish to try and click on their link.

Once you have reached the site, type in the area code and phone number you are researching. If a match is found, you will be shown the information available. Most of the time, this will be the name and address on the account, although some sites will furnish only the name.

If you do not receive a match, see if the site has separate search blocks for cell phones and land lines. If so, try searching under cell phones. Also, make sure that the number you entered is correct.

If there is still no match, there could be several reasons. Some prepaid cells, or burn phones, do not require any type of registration to activate. Therefore, there is no data on file to retrieve. Also, some companies, like collection agencies, keep their land lines out of the database.

Most reverse lookup sites also offer other services, but not all are free. You can find the name associated with a social security number, or who is shown as residing at a given address. Some allow you to search by name to find email address or phone number. Looking up the owner of a phone number, however, remains the most popular search.
